Update on current status
ABOVE: In 2018 and 2019, at the request of the NY State Dept of Environmental Conservation (NYDEC), the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) removed more than 2000 drums of hazardous waste from the Brillo Landfill in Victory, NY. Some of the drums had decomposed and had released contamination into soil and groundwater. In 2022 the Federal government designated Brillo as a priority site for clean-up under the "Superfund" program.
This summer USEPA is (finally) in Victory starting to investigate the remaining risks to people's health and the environment from Brillo, and to identify options for clean-up. The Federal process will take years to plan and execute.
In the meantime, with support from a grant from Freshwater Future, Sterling Water Stewards has reviewed available Federal, State and County records related to Brillo. We produced a report summarizing what is known about the landfill. Our report identifies priority issues that the Federal government should address (click to download).
Sterling Water Stewards Report & Recommendations on Brillo
A key recommendation is that the USEPA must determine the full lateral and vertical extent of contamination; previous testing was at relatively shallow depths.
Sterling Water Stewards also has been working with property owners near Brillo to educate them about health risks and mitigation options, and to test private wells.
