STERLING TOWN BOARD CANDIDATES' FORUM
The Sterling Town Board will make crucial decisions regarding protection of our public and private water resources. We need stronger laws to protect our water resources before the moratorium is lifted, and the Town Board has the authority to enact those protective laws.
Sterling Water Stewards held a Candidates' Forum in August 2021 where Town Board Candidates were invited to tell voters where they stand on water issues.

Town Board Candidates Joan Kelley, Charles Krul, Michele McIntyre, and Caren Thompson accepted Sterling Water Stewards' invitation to tell the voters where they stand on the water issues affecting the Village of Fair Haven and Town of Sterling. Each of the candidates professed to care about protecting our water resources, but some of these candidates have been far more involved than others in attending all the public meetings on these issues over the past year. Kelley, McIntyre and Thompson are competing for just two seats. Krul is running unopposed.
WHO IS ON THE TOWN BOARD NOW? WHO IS RUNNING?
The Town Board has four councilmen, plus the Town Supervisor. Each of these five members has an equal vote.
The current Town Board members are: Scott Crawford (Supervisor), John Borden, Jay John Sawyer, Charles Krul, and Leigh Shortslef.
Scott Crawford was serving as a councilman when former Town Supervisor June Smith resigned in July 2020. Joan Kelley was appointed to serve as Town Supervisor for the remainder of 2020. Town Councilor Scott Crawford ran unopposed on the November 2020 ballot for the Town Supervisor's seat for the year 2021, the second year of the two-year term. Crawford is currently running unopposed to retain his position for another term.
Charles Krul was appointed to fill the seat vacated by Crawford. He is now running unopposed to retain his seat.
John Borden's term expires in December 2021 and he is not running for re-election. Jay John Sawyer's term also expires this year, and he was defeated in the Republican primary. Thus there are two open seats on the Board.
Three candidates are competing to fill the two open seats: Joan Kelley, Michele McIntyre, and Caren Thompson.
Leigh Shortslef's term expires in December 2023.
Election Day is Tuesday Nov. 2. Early voting will take place Oct. 23-31.
